- The memorial day held for George Claridge Druce: 18th May 1996
Edited by F Watkins and S Marner
Summary...The George Claridge Druce Memorial Day was held in Oxford on Saturday 18th May 1996 to celebrate the life of a distinguished field botanist and Fellow of the Royal Society, and to mark the official unveiling of a new headstone in Holywell Cemetery. The original monument was lost in the 1970s leaving the former Oxford Mayor’s grave unmarked. The new stone was purchased by The Botanical Society of the British Isles (BSBI), the cost of erection was met by subscrirption and the day was jointly organised by the Ashmolean Natural History Society of Oxfordshire, the University of Oxford Plant Sciences Department and Oxford University Botanic Garden. - In celebration of the Centenary of the Ashmolean Natural History Society of Oxfordshire 1901 – 2001

C R Lambrick
Summary...No translation of Sibthorp’s Flora Oxoniensis (1794) has been previously published, perhaps because the species accounts there are readily accessible as he uses Linnaean plant names, and most of the localities given are extant place names. Here we present translations from the Latin of his Dedication and Preface. The Preface covers his comments on the flora of the county and historical information on previous botanists in Oxford especially those associated with the Oxford Physic Garden, now the Oxford Botanic Garden. Sibthorp’s records of vascular plants and stoneworts have been put into a spreadsheet with his notes on habitats, flowering time and localities. In addition, there is information on modern records of species in the areas where they were known to Sibthorp.
Some conclusions on the implications of Sibthorp’s work are given, notably a table of species which are no longer to be found in the vice county.
Spreadsheet of Sibthorp’s records together with modern records in the areas where they were known to Sibthorp - Some early 20th Century proceedings of the Ashmolean Natural History Society of Oxfordshire
The proceedings take the form of paper-bound booklets and each contains a list of members, a summary of the year’s programme, various reports and a list of books in the library. They also have natural history reports which it is intended to present here in electronic form. Each report will appear as a facsimile and in a searchable version. At present various back numbers are available as hard copies, with dates ranging from 1901 to 1968. Copies will be posted free to good homes on receipt of a suitably stamped-addressed envelope. If you would like to have one or more of them, please email enquiries. You will receive a full list and detail of weights for postage. We are gradually putting some of the natural history reports on this website, in PDF format. Note that although every effort has been made to eliminate errors in the searchable versions, some may still remain. We suggest that you check the facsimile version as well.
