Vincent Ruane - Kingwood Common Local Wildlife Site
Sat, Aug 6th 2022
One of the large species-rich commons of the Chiltern plateau. The clay with flints capping over the chalk gives acidic soils which support heathland, a habitat rare in the county, Vincent Ruane will lead us and says we could see Broad-leaved Helleborine, Violet Helleborine, Tutsan, Aspen, Rowan, Silver and Downy Birches, Whitebeam, and Wild Service trees. There are also ancient banks with some fantastic old Beech and Oak hedgerows intermingled with Crab Apple. The woodland glades are full of wildflowers that include Common Centaury. There is a wide range of birds too from Pipits to Woodpeckers.
Meet at 10.30 in the carpark of the Unicorn Pub RG9 5LX at the junction of Colmore Lane and Colliers Lane, Peppard Common, at SU701817. Please e-mail Camilla Lambrick (firstname.lastname@example.org) by Friday 5th August if you would like to join us for a pub lunch afterwards.
