For half a million years people have been doing some very strange things with fossils. These include eating them, dropping them in goblets of wine, burying them with their dead and using them to decorate their bodies. But above all, to our prehistoric ancestors, fossils were the very stuff of artistic inspiration. Drawing on archaeology, mythology and folklore, Ken McNamara will take you on a journey through prehistory with these curious stones, and explore humankind’s unending quest for the meaning of fossils.
Ken McNamara was formerly Head of Earth Sciences at the Western Australian Museum, and lecturer and Director of the Sedgwick Museum in the Department of Earth Sciences, University of Cambridge. He is an Emeritus Fellow of Downing College, and Adjunct Professor at the University of Western Australia. He now lives in the jarrah/marri forest outside Perth, where he writes books on palaeontology and geology.
