Across the world, migratory bird populations are undergoing change, with advances in timing of migration, northward range shifts and, far too commonly, declines in abundance. What is causing these changes and can we predict future changes? Since the mid-1990s, we have been tracking Icelandic individual black-tailed godwits on their migratory journeys with the help of thousands of volunteer observers, and these sightings have helped to reveal how climate change is driving shifts in range, phenology and abundance, and what the future might hold for birds that travel the world.
